Americas Cup 2013 San Francisco

After much quarrel and debate between the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the America's Cup Event Authority (ACEA), which is responsible for the commercial side of the 34th America's Cup, the 34th America’s Cup will begin in San Francisco in late August.

The dates for this year’s (2012) racing for the America’s Cup World Series, the global circuit of events leading up to the September 2013 America’s Cup regatta in San Francisco, are as follows:

The America’s Cup is the oldest active trophy in international sport. The America’s Cup is awarded to the winner of the America's Cup match races between two yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America's Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup.

Some of the notable figures in the sport include Brad Butterworth who is a world-renowned yachtsman known for the role he played as tactician and skipper in the America's Cup for Team New Zealand and the Alinghi team of Switzerland. Another world renowned sailor is Sir Russell Coutts, his achievements include a Gold medal in the Finn Class in the 1984 Olympic Games, and winning the America's Cup four times. He has a perfect record in America's Cup racing with 20 wins to 0 losses.
