Top NCAA Men's Basketball Programs Are A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Why is it that the same teams seem to dominate March Madness, the annual NCAA  men's collegiate basketball tournament? For that matter, why does the same small group of institutions seem to top annual best-college rankings?  According to a theory developed by a Duke University engineer, these hierarchies are not only natural, but predictable.

Just as continually growing streams flow into a larger river, or smaller and smaller branches grow out from a single tree trunk, examples of these hierarchies abound in the natural world.  Whether it is a river or basketball rankings, there can only be a few at the "top" of the hierarchy, while there are many below. Once this pattern is established, like a river digging a wider and deeper bed over time, it is difficult to change it, said Adrian Bejan, engineering professor at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.

These hierarchies can be predicted by the constructal law, which Bejan developed 15 years ago and has been using to describe and predict human-made and natural phenomenon. The theory is based on the principle that flow systems evolve their designs to minimize imperfections, reducing friction or other forms of resistance, to flow more easily in time.

The best players will tend to choose winning programs, and these programs send higher percentages of athletes to the NBA, which in turn attracts the best players, said Bejan, who was a member of Romania's national select basketball team in the late 1960s and a starter on a club team that competed internationally.

The successful programs get the blue-chip recruits with less "effort" than lower-ranked schools, Bejan said. The same proves true in academia, he added, since universities with reputations like CalTech or MIT will naturally attract the brightest scientists-to-be with less effort.

The results of Bejan's analysis were published online March 1 in the International Journal of Design and Nature & Ecodynamics. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of the Navy.

Though the academic and athletic rankings may seem similar on the surface, they are completely different flow systems existing in the same space: a college campus.

"Academic excellence and basketball excellence are two different flow hierarchies in the same place, like the spread of early man across the continents or river basins on the landscape," Bejan said. "Together they show how the evolution of sports allows us to witness biological evolution."

Athletic competition is an ideal medium to study evolution because its outcome is so simple and direct -- an athlete or team either wins or loses. No other factors come into play. Bejan has already shown in previous studies that athletes have grown bigger, taller and faster over the past 100 years. Their growth is almost three times that of average people over the same time frame.

"The science of sports evolution is a significant step in evolutionary biology, where the accepted view is that evolution is impossible to observe because of its long timeframe," Bejan said. "With sports, we can focus on a particular population of athletes and witness 'live' the evolution of the design and performance of this selected group."

Universities, on the other hand, have multiple objectives with their individual measurements.
"While in sport you just have to win, a university must cover a much wider spectrum of pursuits, from engineering, literature, the arts and so on," Bejan said. "Had the two rankings been related, sports and academics, you would see more of the same universities at the top of both rankings. Most of the universities appear only in one of the rankings -- they seem to separate themselves into two different worlds."

Bejan believes that the term scholar-athlete may be a misnomer.

"When educators and sports announcers refer to college players and scholar-athletes, they misrepresent both worlds," he said. "A more accurate name would be 'basketball students,' just as engineering students are those who study engineering. This stresses the idea that the global flow of education is a superposition of evolving vasculatures associated with the various disciplines that are a part of the university's mission."

Just Pretend Those Carrots Are Cheese Fries

The problem with your diet is not that you?ve been eating the wrong food, but rather you?ve been thinking about your food all wrong.  According to Alia Crum, a clinical psychology researcher at Yale University, our mind?s opinion of food labeled or thought of to be ?diet? or ?low fat? can actually affect our body?s physiological response after eating it, which changes our metabolism.

Her sneaky research team told 46 volunteers that they were getting two milkshakes to drink.  In the first test, they were told they were sampling a ?health? shake that had no fat, no added sugar and a skinny 140 calories.  At a separate test, the same group were told they were rewarded with an ?indulgent? shake weighing in at a guilt-inducing 620 calories and full of fat.

The trick was that in each test, the milkshakes were actually identical with each having 360 calories.  Only the description and labelling of the shakes were different.

At this point, Crum and her less than honest team could have just asked the volunteers which shake made them ?feel fuller.?  Instead, they chose to measure satiety by observing changes in the level of ghrelin, the so-called ?hunger hormone? in the stomach that signals the brain when to eat and when to stop eating.  When you?re hungry, your level of ghrelin goes up, telling your brain to find some snacks.  After a meal, your ghrelin goes down trying to convince you not to go back for a third helping.

Blood tests were gathered from the drinkers before, during and after the shakes to measure their ghrelin.

Results showed that when the participants drank the ?health? shake, their ghrelin levels stayed about the same or slightly increased.  However, after drinking the ?indulgent? shake, their ghrelin levels dropped significantly.  In other words, their perception of what they were eating tricked their body into responding differently. Same shake, different physiological responses.

The study was published last month in the journal Health Psychology.

So, let?s put this in the real world.  You?re trying to lose weight by eating ?healthy? foods, with lower calories and fat.  But, you?ve also been conditioned to think that these foods just don?t satisfy your hunger like a greasy cheeseburger would.  Eating 500 calories of fruits and vegetables doesn?t feel as good as eating 500 calories of french fries.

"What was most interesting," Crum said, "is that the results were somewhat counter-intuitive. Consuming the shake thinking it was ?indulgent' was healthier than thinking it was ?sensible.' It led to a sharper reduction in ghrelin." By drinking the ?indulgent? shake, you actually might eat less after that since your lower ghrelin levels would dampen the hunger signal to your brain.

"I think the most important message from this study is for consumers to be aware of the mind-set that they are in while they are eating, and especially the mind-set that individuals seem to automatically adopt when trying to maintain or lose weight," writes Crum.. "The mind-set of 'sensibility' or 'restraint'?no matter what we're eating?might be compromising our body's physiological response, counteracting our hard work at dieting. People should still work to eat healthy, but do so in a mind-set of indulgence."

Tricking the brain is not new to Crum.  In 2007, she assisted psychologist Ellen Langer in a groundbreaking mindfulness study that convinced New York City hotel maids that the daily work they performed was enough to improve their health.  They interviewed 84 maids on their daily exercise habits outside of work.  Most said they barely worked out at all.

Then, they educated half the group on how their daily work of changing beds, vacuuming, etc. was actually good exercise.  After one month, they reported that the educated group?s blood pressure had dropped by 10% without any additional work or exercise.  Langer and Crum claim the placebo effect had changed the women?s health, just by the perception that they were exercising.  The study had its critics, but it was an interesting finding nonetheless.

So, while a Big Mac is still bad for you, it may actually convince you to eat less that day then trying to fool your brain into thinking your bag of carrots is actually a bag of cheese fries.

Governor?s Gold Cup 2007 ? TNFA vs. Manipur

A long-awaited victory for the Tibetan National Team came during the second half of All-India's "Governor's Gold Cup" against Team Manipur on October 29, 2007 at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, East Sikkim. Right-Winger "Afrie" No. 6 with the assist from veteran Midfielder, "Dawa" No. 9, scored the game's only goal. The Tibetan crowd roared in applause as the game picked up.

Earlier during the first half, both teams jockeyed for play, but with a strong defense backed by No. 18 "Kegen," TNFA was undeterred despite numerous close calls. TNFA's veteran goalkeeper, Ten Namgyal, blocked several good attempts at goal by Manipur's strikers. But, it was during the second half that proved Team Tibet's dominance over Manipur. Teamwork and stamina earned TNFA the win. With this win, Team Tibet moves up to the Pre-Quarterfinals against Bhutan XI in a historic match on Wednesday, October 31.

Is There Bias In Selection Of March Madness Teams?

By examining historical data, statisticians in the College of Science at Virginia Tech have quantified biases that play a role in granting Division I at-large basketball teams inclusion in the NCAA March Madness Tournament.

Assistant professors Leanna House and Scotland Leman found that in addition to the standard Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) used by the 10-member selection committee, biases such as the team's marquee and the strength of its schedule also increase the entry odds for college basketball's tournament.

"We wanted to quantify how much bias there is for bubble teams," Leman said. So-named "bubble teams" are those that do not have an automatic bid but are still considered potential teams to be invited to the tournament. Usually bout 30 teams fall into this category.

One bias for bubble teams, House and Leman found, was consideration of the marquee (or pedigree) of the team. For instance, a team that historically has an outstanding record and is usually included in the tournament has that fact in its favor.

"Having a rich history of a spot in the tournament will 'break the tie,'" House said.  She and Leman found that inclusion probabilities were much higher for marquee teams. For example, in the 2009-10 season, the bias of not being a marquee team lowered Virginia Tech's chances of receiving an at-large bid from 0.83 to 0.31. During the 1999-2000 season, the marquee bias increased the University of North Carolina's chances from 0.32 to 0.85.

"UNC's marquee status during that season had a substantial influence on the committee's decision." Leman said. "Of that, I'm sure."

The statisticians also explored the influence a team's schedule has on its RPI in addition to its record. By using a hypothetical model, Leman and House determined that the more powerhouse teams a bubble team plays in a season, regardless of whether they win or lose, will help them win a bid in the tournament.
"Of course scheduling is a complex process and involves a lot of negotiation," Leman said. "But in cases where a coach is able to select to play a powerful team or a smaller, less powerful team, it is better to pick the power team. The rule of thumb is: the more powerhouse teams, the better."

At the beginning of each March Madness decision-making process, the selection committee is provided documentation that contains season statistics and the RPI for each team. Other measures of team strength are excluded.

"The RPI accounts for known, quantitative biases in raw winning percentages that may impact their ratings, but it has been shown repeatedly that raw winning percentages per team are not adequate for ranking teams," Leman said. "Tournament decisions made for teams with only moderately high RPIs (bubble teams), until now, were not clear."

Leman and House say their research was motivated by a chance meeting with Virginia Tech head basketball coach Seth Greenberg in a restaurant in the spring of 2010. At that time, Virginia Tech had not won a bid for the tournament. Greenberg suggested that he would like to know how tournament decisions are made for at-large teams.

The two statisticians, along with graduate assistants John Szarka and Hayley Nelson, stepped up to the challenge and have presented their conclusions just in time for this year's March Madness to begin.
"We don't want to create, improve, or validate a ranking system," House said. "Our goal was simply to evaluate how the selection committee has chosen teams for the tournament in the past."

Lazy Person's Guide To Old Age

Stop eating all of that junk food.  Why?  So, you can live longer, of course.  Get off the La-Z-Boy and go run five miles.  Why?!  So, you can enjoy your old age.  No more drinking and smoking.  Why?!!  So, you can live to be 100 years old.

The rationale often given for converting to healthy habits has been to give you a longer life.  Who better to know about long lives than those that are closing in on the big 100.  The U.S. Census Bureau estimates there were nearly 425,000 people aged 95 and older living in the U.S. in 2010 ? still only a small percentage of the 40 million U.S. adults 65 and over.

What?s their secret?  Are they non-smoking, teetotaling, vegan marathon runners?  Not exactly, according to researchers at the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
They interviewed 477 Ashkenazi Jews who were 95 and older (95-112, 75 percent of them women), and participating in Einstein's Longevity Genes Project.  The Ashkenazi descendents are more genetically alike, making it easier to control genetic differences.  The group was asked about their living habits back when they were 70 to get an idea of their daily lives that got them this far.  Questions about alcohol and tobacco use, their diet, and how much they exercised helped paint a picture of environmental factors that influenced their health.
Next, Dr. Nir Barzilai and his team compared the test group with 3,164 people with similar birth years who had provided similar data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1) back in the early 1970s.

Surprisingly, there was little evidence that living to a ripe old age required following all of the recommended rules.  Only 27 percent of the elderly women ate a low-calorie diet in their earlier years, matching an equal percentage of women in the larger population.  In the bigger group, 22 percent of the men drank alcohol daily, but so did 24 percent of the old guys.  It must be exercise, right?  Nope, only 43 percent of the centenarians reported regular moderate workouts compared with 57 percent of their comparison counterparts.

Dr. Barzilai did find one factor difference, obesity.  While the older population was just as likely to be overweight as the others, it was rare that they were obese.  Only 4.5 percent of the males and 9.6 percent of the females were severely overweight, compared to 12.1 percent and 16.2 percent of the large control group, respectively.

So, if its not all of that ?nurture?, then it must be nature or genetic differences that account for the 100 birthday candles.

"In previous studies of our centenarians, we've identified gene variants that exert particular physiology effects, such as causing significantly elevated levels of HDL or 'good' cholesterol," said Dr. Barzilai, who is a professor of medicine and of genetics at Einstein. "This study suggests that centenarians may possess additional longevity genes that help to buffer them against the harmful effects of an unhealthy lifestyle."

That?s it, then, we can all go out and party this weekend, since we have no control over which end of the gene pool we were thrown into, right?  As retired football coach and ESPN analyst Lee Corso likes to say, ?Not so fast, my friend.?

"Although this study demonstrates that centenarians can be obese, smoke and avoid exercise, those lifestyle habits are not good choices for most of us who do not have a family history of longevity," said Dr. Barzilai. "We should watch our weight, avoid smoking and be sure to exercise, since these activities have been shown to have great health benefits for the general population, including a longer lifespan."

Then again, maybe life after 90 isn?t all that it?s cracked up to be.
